Volunteers are what keep ITE going and makes us the effective and dynamic organization that we are today. Volunteerism gives our great organization its strength and also makes it so relevant and necessary to the professional transportation community. I consider myself indeed privileged to have the opportunity to attend so many local ITE Chapter and Section meetings and meet so many of our outstanding volunteers. This March, I traveled to the Southern Arizona Section and, along with Chapter President Scott Nodes, enjoyed the honor of recognizing our "ITE Queen" Jenny Grote for her many years of service to her local ITE Chapter. From Southern Arizona, I went to Lodi for their 32nd Annual Vendor Show. Chapter President Pete Palle and I recognized Gary Tsutsumi who was the volunteer who started their show 31 years ago. After Lodi, I had the burdensome task of flying to Hawaii, where Chapter President Wayne Yoshioka and I recognized Cathy Leong, Julian Ng, Cheryl Yoshida and Jodi Chew for their many years of exceptional service.

This year, we are fortunate to have three exceptional candidates for the position of International Director, and two equally well-qualified candidates for the position of Sectary-Treasurer. Please take the time to read and carefully consider the statements of these candidates before you choose those who will be your new leaders. Last year, only about 10 percent of eligible voters participated in the selection process. Please play an active role in choosing those who will be our leaders for the coming year.

Make your final plans now to attend the annual ITE District 6 meeting at scenic Kalispell, Montana, from July 10 to 13. Kalispell is a fantastic mountain community in northwestern Montana located about a two hours' drive from Glacier National Park or, for those who are willing to do more driving, about a day's drive from the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park. For those who wish to pursue a socially acceptable vice, remember that video poker is legal in Montana.

Kalispell may be reached by Delta Airlines thrrough Salt Lake City. However, by far the most scenic and relaxing way to get there is to travel by Amtrak's celebrated Coast Starlight to Portland and then the Empire Builder to Montana.

Together we are the best
Zaki Mustafa
