With the continued support of the Professional ITE California Border Section the San Diego State University ITE Student Chapter is maintaining its strength. Big plans continue to drive the Chapter forward toward more goals and varied duties. The Spring Semester only brought about 2 meetings, but was able to show the interest developed with a year of effort. The last meeting discussed fundraising, the then upcoming Golf Tournament and the Annual Conference in Anaheim, California. Chris Mendiara from LLG gave an insightful and entertaining presentation on general traffic engineering practices and policies.
Interest in the Chapter has been ever increasing since the reintroduction of the ITE Student Chapter in the spring of 2007. The SDSU Chapter has a number of outstanding students willing to further the Student Chapter, help the Professional Chapter, and the community. The following are the elected 2008 officers for the ITE SDSU Student Chapter, who have dedicated much of their time and effort to maintain the Chapter and ensure its success for the future:
- President Kyle Perez, a senior who is originally from Bakersfield, is looking forward to the future of the SDSU ITE Chapter. Last year he was very involved as the Chapter’s secretary and did his best to help the club. He transferred to San Diego State University from Bakersfield College in 2005 and became involved with ITE as soon as he heard of the organization (2007).
- Vice President Holly Miller is a freshman from Orange, CA, who has experienced ITE all throughout her life. Holly has attended nearly every annual ITE conference since she was born. She learned of the organization through her father, Rock Miller. In the future she hopes to design sports complexes and athletic fields.
- Treasurer Chris Benitez is a senior who will be graduating in the winter. Chris is originally from San Diego, but has recently transferred back from California State Fullerton to his hometown. He learned of ITE through his friend and fellow officer Billy Reyes. In the future he hopes to work for an engineering company and improve San Diego.
- Secretary Billy Reyes is a senior who has 1 ½ years left at SDSU. He transferred to SDSU after attending Miramar, Mesa and City Community Colleges. Billy learned of ITE through his uncle and developed a fervor to be involved after attending an ITE meeting. He is looking forward to continuing his education and taking the steps needed to become a respected engineering professional.
All
members of the Student Chapter have the opportunity to take part in the
various functions held by the ITE California Border Section and are able
to not only attend many of these functions, but offer their assistance
in running the events as well. During last month’s golf tournament, the
students enjoyed a beautiful warm day in Escondido actively
participating in the starting of the tournament. Their tasks included
checking in the golf participants, selling mulligan and raffle Tickets,
and ensuring each team had a photo taken. In addition to the Chapter’s
beginning tournament duties, they provided an extra challenge on the
17th Hole, challenging the participants to see how close they could come
to the cup, with all proceeds ($215) going towards the Chapter’s goal of
sending multiple people to the upcoming 2008 Anaheim conference.
Eager to experience the Annual Conference again and continue its
involvement at the Conference, the SDSU Student Chapter plans to raise
enough funds to send five student representatives to Anaheim. So far
the Chapter has raised $1,215 and is striving toward its conference
fundraising goal of $2,100. These five representatives are looking
forward to interacting with other ITE student chapters, meeting various
professionals and learning much from these engineers and this
conference.
The Student Chapter appreciates the assistance of the Professional
Chapter and is more than thrilled with the tremendous time and energy
that the past president put forth. The SDSU ITE Chapter thanks former
ITE SDSU Student President Heather Gebman in the great strides to which
she accomplished getting the Chapter back up and running towards its
bright future. The following is a statement of hers that still very
much applies:
Members of the chapter display great leadership qualities with high hopes of strengthening the chapter’s presence both on campus and within the community. With a motto of - “If we’re going to do this, we’re going to give it our all!” - it is easy to see why the chapter is enjoying it’s resurgence.
